SUMMARY:January Breakfast Meeting - Diana Simpson\, Constitutional Litigator
DESCRIPTION:Register or RSVP Here\nJoin us for breakfast on Friday\, January 10th at 7:30 am. Featured speaker is Diana Simpson. Diana Simpson is an attorney with the Institute for Justice. She joined the Institute’s headquarters office in 2013 after working as a constitutional law fellow in the Arizona office. \nDiana litigates to protect private property and other individual rights\, with a particular interest in challenging irrational zoning decisions and abusive fines and fees practices. For instance\, she represented a homeless shelter after a North Carolina town invoked bogus reasons to prohibit it from opening. The team obtained a federal court victory recognizing that the government violated the Constitution by irrationally denying the shelter its needed permit to open. \nShe currently represents a Texas auto mechanic who faces an impossible-to-comply-with minimum parking requirement. And she is lead attorney in a class action lawsuit against the City of Chicago challenging its impound system\, which imposes excessive fines and harsh fees on tens of thousands of Chicago residents and visitors each year. Beyond these cases\, she has represented many other Americans in their fight to pursue their dreams. \nDiana’s work has been featured by outlets including The Economist\, The Wall Street Journal\, National Public Radio’s 1A\, The New York Times\, and many others nationwide. \nIJ’s 4 Pillars: \nJ’s work targets the core freedoms that form the foundation of a free society: the rights to own and enjoy property\, speak freely\, earn a living\, and have a meaningful choice in your children’s education. We have litigated hundreds of cases on behalf of thousands of individuals under those four pillars\, and Americans are measurably freer in each area as a direct result of our work.

Levy Center for Constitutional Studies is named in his honor. \nToward a Better Constitution \nBob Levy will discuss how the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted — analyzing the views of liberals and conservatives\, and explaining how those views differ from the libertarian perspective embraced by legal scholars at the Cato Institute\, where Bob chaired the board for many years.  Additionally\, Bob will compare and contrast two leading theories of constitutional interpretation: originalism and “the living constitution.”  He’ll also examine several controversial constitutional questions\, describe how the Supreme Court has occasionally subverted the document’s original design\, and recommend three constitutional amendments – involving the taxing power\, interstate commerce\, and the administrative state. \nFull Bio: \nBob Levy was\, for 14 years\, chairman of the board of directors at the Cato Institute.  He is now chairman emeritus.  Bob joined Cato as senior fellow in constitutional studies in 1997 after 25 years in business. The Institute’s Robert A. Levy Center for Constitutional Studies is named in his honor.  He has also served on boards of the Federalist Society\, the Foundation for Government Accountability\, and the Institute for Justice.  Bob received his PhD in business from the American University in 1966\, then founded CDA Investment Technologies\, a major provider of investment information and software.  At age 50\, after leaving CDA in 1991\, Bob went to George Mason law school\, where he was chief articles editor of the law review and class valedictorian.  He received his JD degree in 1994.  The next two years he clerked for Judge Royce Lamberth on the US District Court and Judge Douglas Ginsburg on the US Court of Appeals\, both in Washington\, DC. \nFor many years\, Bob was an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University.  His writing has appeared in the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, USA Today\, Washington Post\, National Review\, and many other publications.  He has discussed public policy on national radio and TV programs\, including ABC’s Nightline\, Fox’s The O’Reilly Factor\, PBS’s Newshour\, and NBC’s Today Show.  Bob’s latest book\, co-authored with William Mellor\, is The Dirty Dozen: How 12 Supreme Court Cases Radically Expanded Government and Eroded Freedom.  Bob served as co-counsel in District of Columbia v. Heller\, the successful Supreme Court challenge to Washington\, D.C.’s gun ban.

SUMMARY:Jim DeMint - "Building a Conservative Culture in Washington"
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to RSVP\nJoin Us – Friday\, March 1st at 7:30 am\, as we bring Jim DeMint to substitute for Mark Meadows cancellation. \nJim DeMint has fought tirelessly for freedom\, prosperity\, and traditional American values against the Washington swamp for over two decades. Today\, he leads and trains a new generation of conservative warriors as Chairman of the Conservative Partnership Institute. \nDeMint represented South Carolina in the U.S. House (1999-2005) and U.S. Senate (2005-2013). Known for policy innovation\, he authored leading conservative reforms to health care\, education\, taxes\, and entitlements. DeMint garnered national acclaim from conservatives for leading efforts to ban congressional earmarks\, the source of billions of dollars of wasteful spending for decades which had led to corruption and widespread abuse. He also successfully led the fight to stop the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill in 2007. DeMint is also the Founder of the Senate Conservatives Fund\, which played a major role in the election of many of the Senate’s leading conservatives like Mike Lee\, Ted Cruz\, Rand Paul\, and Tom Cotton. \nDeMint then served as the President of The Heritage Foundation for four years\, taking the organization to new heights of influence. Under DeMint’s direction\, Heritage played a major role in the Trump transition team\, with the policy series “Mandate for Leadership” used as the basis for the President’s first budget and numerous other administration reforms. During DeMint’s tenure\, Heritage partnered with the Federalist Society to create a list of possible Supreme Court judicial nominations that culminated in the confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch. President Trump appointed DeMint to the White House Economic Advisory Board in 2020. \nDeMint’s latest book\, They’re Lying to You\, was a number 1# best seller on Amazon. He and his wife\, Debbie\, have four children who now are grown and married. They’ve taken a shine to being grandparents.
